Disk counters are enabled by default on Windows Server 2003 servers. You can use both physical and logical disk counters to determine whether a disk bottleneck exists. You can partition a single physical disk into several logical volumes, although SQL Server 2005 servers more commonly use disk arrays. In general, the most useful counters for identifying pressure on the disk resource of a SQL Server 2005 server are those that monitor a physical array, rather than logical partitions or individual disks within the array. In a production environment, SQL Server 2005 server operation can result in very large database and transaction log files, and disk capacity limits can be a potential problem, even with the very large disk arrays currently available. In this situation, it is good practice to configure an alert that warns you when disk usage exceeds a predefined level. The counters you need to monitor to identify disk array resource bottlenecks are as follows:

Another table would contain the partition key, which in this case is the CustomerID, along with the ServerID. For example, the following is a partial result set for a customer lookup table:

Dynamically assign IP: 10.1.1.3 Subnet: 255.255.255.0 Gateway: 10.1.1.1 DNS: 10.1.1.1

The challenge with DDR involves searching for data across all partitions. You definitely do not want to execute distributed queries against hundreds of servers. Typically, the solution to this problem lies with the creation of summary data. For example, you could create a table that contained summary data for each customer and all orders for that customer. This same table would be located on all the servers. When there was a need to search through all the customers, you would reference the summary table to locate the customer record. You could then retrieve the order detail for that customer by executing a distributed query against the server containing that customer s data. For more information about data-dependent routing, refer to the article, Microsoft TechNet SQL TechCenter: Scaling Out SQL Server with Data Dependent Routing at http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/sql/2005/scddrtng.mspx. You can also refer to the article, Scaling Out SQL Server with Data-Dependent Routing at http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/power/ps3q05-20050100-Auger.pdf.

When you are configuring an alert, on the other hand, you will probably want to monitor individual physical disks or partitions. In this case, the counters you can use are the following ones:

A complete discussion of Virtual Server is beyond the scope of this book. You can find step-by-step instructions for performing each of the actions required to configure the base environment in the Virtual Server documentation. If you have physical hardware capable of clustering, you can perform the prac tices on this hardware by skipping the steps specific to configuring the Virtual Server environment.

Based on the widely adopted concept of Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA), Service-Oriented Database Architecture (SODA) combines SOA with the new features available in SQL Server 2005. SODA allows your database application to use independent and reusable services available through the database itself. This means the database is operating as a service provider. SOA involves a collection of services that communicate with each other. The services themselves are autonomous and do not rely on the state from other services to function. However, they must have the ability to communicate with each other using XML messages, and SOA allows them to do that. SODA offers a way for SQL Server 2005 to implement the service-oriented architecture. The benefit to using SODA is that you have a flexible solution in which services can easily be moved to another server if necessary. It also handles a high volume of transactions and database updates. Most important, applications can take advantage of features built into SQL Server 2005, such as the following:

Windows clustering is the foundation for building a SQL Server failover cluster. This lesson outlines how to configure a Windows cluster and describes best practices for configuration.

The most frequent cause of outages for a cluster is hardware that has not been certified for clus tering. To ensure that the hardware you are deploying is certified for clustering, it must appear in the Windows Catalog. The entire hardware solution must specifically designate that it is certified for clustering, so you need to ensure that you check the clustering categories of the Windows Catalog (which can be found at www.microsoft.com/whdc/hcl/default.mspx).
