Technically, the formatting system can handle multiple types of objects if you tell it how. Run Dir | Gm and you ll notice that the pipeline contains both DirectoryInfo and FileInfo objects (Gm has no problem working with pipelines that contain multiple kinds of objects and will display member information for all of them). When you run Dir by itself, the output is perfectly legible. That s because Microsoft provides a predefined custom formatting view for DirectoryInfo and FileInfo objects, and that view is handled by the Format-Custom cmdlet. Format-Custom is mainly used to display different predefined custom views. You could technically create your own predefined custom views, but the necessary XML syntax is complicated and isn t publicly documented at this time. So custom views are pretty much limited to what Microsoft provides. Microsoft s custom views do get a lot of usage, though. PowerShell s help information is stored as objects, for example, and the formatted help files you see on the screen are the result of feeding those objects into a custom view.

The Sender Reputation Level (SRL) is a value that the Sender Reputation agent calculates based on tests that it performs on incoming messages. The tests include the accuracy of reverse DNS data for a given sender, whether the server that the sender uses appears to be an open proxy (a proxy server that accepts connection requests from any other server and forwards the SMTP traffic as if it originated from the local host), the correctness of the EHLO or HELO connection (senders who use many different and unique EHLO commands are likely to be spammers; regular traffic from nonspammers tends to use the same EHLO command consistently), and the SCL ratings that Exchange has calculated using the Content Filter agent for previous messages from the same sender. A message that comes in with a high SCL rating can cause the sender s SRL to be adjusted downward; a message with a low SCL rating can cause the opposite effect. The resulting SRL is a number between 0 and 9, where a value of 0 indicates less than a 1 percent chance that the sender is a

spammer, and a value of 9 indicates that the sender is very likely to be a spammer. An SRL value of 4 indicates that Exchange is neutral about this sender. The Sender Reputation agent stores the data that it gathers in a database called Pasetting. edb that is located in \TransportRoles\Data\Senderreputation. Over time, a sender s reputation can improve or degrade based on the type of messages sent. All senders start at 0. The agent starts to calculate SRLs for senders after Exchange captures 20 messages from them. The agent actually fires at two points: after the MAIL FROM: command (so that the agent knows who the message is supposedly coming from) and after the end of data command is received, so that the agent knows the SCL that the Content Filter agent has calculated for the message. Through the Properties dialog box for the Sender Reputation agent (Figure 14-10), you can configure the agent with an SRL threshold to indicate your level of tolerance to spam. The default setting is 9, which means that Exchange takes a cautious approach to deciding that senders reputations are bad enough to block them. Setting a lower level could cause senders to be blocked when they shouldn t be. If a sender reaches the threshold, the Sender Reputation agent flags the sender to the Sender Filtering agent so that it can add the sender s IP address to the blocked senders list for a temporary period, which is 24 hours by default. You can adjust the blocking period to be shorter or longer as you require, up to a maximum value of 48 hours. Senders whose IP addresses are in Microsoft s own SRL list are automatically added to your blocked list.

The Get-SenderReputationConfig cmdlet reveals more about the Sender Reputation configuration. You ll notice that the agent is enabled by default for external mail and disabled for internal mail.
